Sir Quentin Blake's career as an illustrator started at the age of 16 when he had a drawing published in Punch magazine.
But he spent as much time teaching – both English and art – as drawing in his early career before his association with author Roald Dahl cemented his place in the history of children's literature.
His spiky, mad cap and anarchic drawings brought Dahl's collection of heroes, misfits, monsters and rogues to vivid, joyous life, securing him the honour of being the first ever Children's Laureate in 1999.
He has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in children's literature both past and present, including Joan Aiken, Dr Seuss (on the first book not illustrated by the 'doctor' himself) and, more recently, David Walliams.
All this, and much more besides, led to his knighthood in 2013 for services to illustration.
