Tommy Stack

The Horse Racing legend that was Red Rum involved the input of three men – his owner Ginger McCain and jump jockeys Brian Fletcher and Tommy Stack.

Stack earned his moment in the sporting sun when he rode Rummy to his third and final Grand National victory in 1977. At 12, many considered the horse too old to be competitive at his beloved Aintree course. Rummy, and Stack, proved the doubters wrong.

Irish-born Stack was rather more than 'just' a National winner however. He won the National Hunt Champion Jockey title in both 1975 and 1977.

And his racing expertise was confirmed when he moved into training after retiring as a jockey. He trained Las Meninas to victory in the 1994 1,000 Guineas and was responsible for further major victories in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Beverly D. Stakes.

A born competitor, Stack came back from a life-threatening viral illness to enjoy success in both France and America and he is still training horses, from his base in County Tipperary, to this day.
