Hampstead born, Stoke on Trent raised, Saul Hudson is a rock 'n' roll legend.
Okay, he's better known as Slash, the virtuoso guitarist from one of rock's biggest ever acts, Guns N' Roses.
The son of an English artist and an African American costume designer, Slash – so named because as a child he was constantly zipping around in a mad hurry – has always loved his cosmopolitan heritage, declaring: 'I've always been amused that I'm both British and black; particularly because so many American musicians seem to aspire to be British while so many British musicians, in the sixties in particular, went to such great pains to be black'.
What Slash aspired to be was a great rock guitarist, and he achieved that dream with Guns N' Roses.
Their first album, Appetite For Destruction, has sold 28 million copies and counting and they became one of the biggest acts in 80s and 90s Music before Slash's heroin addiction sparked ever-deepening difficulties with front man Axl Rose.
Slash finally quit the band in 1996 but continued in the business with new ventures, a solo career and session work for the likes of Michael Jackson and Lenny Kravitz.
Now clean and sober, Slash's place in the rock 'n' roll pantheon is assured, even if his feud with Rose has never been resolved.
