SIR PETER BLAKE
A single piece of work secured pop artist Peter Blake a place in the national consciousness – the quirky, striking and endlessly fascinating cover for The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The collage of life-sized cardboard models around and behind The Fab Four was designed by Blake and his then-wife, Jann Haworth, and became one of the sixties most iconic images.
Much of its appeal lay in the viewers' ability to name the 60+ people depicted - from Monroe to Marx and involving many writers, performers and obscure Indian gurus in between.
But Sir Peter was far from a one-hit sixties wonder. His work, and appeal, has spanned the decades, leading to another album cover – for the greatest hits compilation Stop The Clocks by Beatles' wannabes Oasis in 2006 – and a collage for his beloved Football team Chelsea in 2010.
His talent and enduring appeal was recognised in 1981 when he became a member of the Royal Academy and he was knighted for his services to art in 2002.
