SIR NICK FALDO
The greatest European golfer of them all was Seve Ballesteros, right? Not if you're counting Major wins because then it's got to be Sir Nick Faldo.
Seve bagged five, Sir Nick has six – three Open Championships and three Masters titles – and he won some of them in extraordinary circumstances.
The 1996 Augusta meltdown of Greg Norman allowed Faldo to claw back a six-shot deficit and take his third Green Jacket with a final round 67 that was in stark contrast to the Australian's desperate 78.
Considered by many a difficult, aloof man, Faldo's gracious and considered words to Norman at the end of that round meant the pair became close friends.
His two other Masters triumphs came in sudden-death play-offs and one of his Open wins involved a study in final round consistency as he parred all 18 holes at Muirfield.
In many ways, Faldo was a trailblazer for English and European golfers, helping to arrest the stranglehold that American players had on Golf at the time, remodelling his swing to improve his game and maintaining his edge through practice, practice and more practice.
And while he will never win a popularity contest with some of his more heralded counterparts, Sir Nick's record will remain second to none for many a season yet.
