Roberto Carlos

One extraordinary free kick does not a Football career make, but it will always be mentioned whenever people talk of Brazil full-back Roberto Carlos.

In 1997, Brazil played hosts France in the first match of Le Tournoi – the warm-up tournament for the following year's World Cup. Carlos had a pop from a free-kick 35 yards from goal and his effort bamboozled two people on its way into the net.

The first was France keeper Fabien Barthez, who stood and watched the swerving, dipping bullet of a shot fly into his net. The second was the ball boy behind the goal who, despite being 10 yards to the right of the goal, ducked because he thought the shot was going to hit him.

Carlos scored 11 goals in 125 appearances for Brazil, ushering in a new era of ultra-attacking full backs along the way and hitting free kicks that were measured at more than 105mph.

His club career was similarly successful, the bulk of which was spent at Real Madrid where he scored an impressive 71 goals in 584 games and won four league and three Champions League titles.

One of the best left backs to play the game and one of the best free-kicks ever scored – Carlos's legacy is secure for years to come.
