Perhaps unsurprisingly for a striker, Robbie Fowler was all about goals. Left foot, right foot, headers – Fowler banged them in, principally for home-town club Liverpool, season after season.
In 589 career appearances – from England through to Australia and Thailand – Fowler scored 252 times.
And he was prolific from the off. Having scored on his first team debut (against Fulham in the first leg of a League Cup tie), Fowler hit all five in the return. He had to wait only five league games to score his first senior hat-trick and he still holds the Premier League record for the fastest ever hat-trick – four minutes and 33 seconds against Arsenal.
Fowler played for Liverpool when the Reds struggled to emulate the league-winning ways of the club's previous two decades.
But there was the consolation of the odd cup win, most notably in 2001, when Liverpool completed an extraordinary treble of League, FA and UEFA Cup victories, with Fowler scoring some key goals along the way.
After falling out with manager Gerard Houllier, Fowler tried his luck at Leeds, Man City, Cardiff, Blackburn and abroad. He even managed a second stint at Anfield and retired with a huge property portfolio under his belt to soften the non-playing blow – a fact immortalised by the Man City fan chant (to the tune of Yellow Submarine) 'We all live in a Robbie Fowler house'.
