Some footballers are one-club men for the simple reason that nobody else wants them. That was never the case with Manchester United stalwart Paul Scholes.
The Salford-born Red was one of his generation's best midfielders – not just domestically, but globally. His glittering United career earned him 11 Premiership titles, two Champions League medals and three FA Cup wins.
He also shone for England in World Cups and European Championships.
At 5ft 6ins, he was a surprisingly good header of a ball, had great balance, touch and awareness. His range of passing was broad and he was one of the cleanest strikers of a ball – especially on the edge of the area – in the game.
So Scholes could do everything, right? Well, everything but tackle. Few games were complete without a trademark reckless lunge for the ball from Scholes, usually followed by a card from the referee.
Since retiring, the previously media-averse quiet man has carved out a career as a pundit. So far, his off-field comments have been as unerringly accurate as his on-field passing.
