Oscar Pistorius

Has there ever been a sportsman who has defied the odds quite like South African athlete Oscar Pistorius? And has there ever been a more stark and sudden fall from grace?

Pistorius's story is certainly one of extremes. He was born without calf bones and had both legs amputated below the knee when he was just 11 months old.

This didn't stop him playing sport at school and when he was fitted with his first racing blades as a 17-year-old, he never looked back.

Pistorius always said that 'You're not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have,' and the 'Blade Runner' set about proving what phenomenal running abilities he possessed.

A hat-trick of Paralympic golds in 2008 would have satisfied many, but Pistorius wanted to test himself against able-bodied athletes. Despite claims that the South African's blades gave him an unfair advantage, Pistorius was allowed to compete in able-bodied events and did just that at the 2012 Olympics in London.

By then, Pistorius was a national hero and he carried the South African flag at the closing ceremony. Within six months, he was being arrested for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. He was eventually found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to five years in jail.

The Pistorius story is remarkable, inspiring, dark and tragic in equal measure.
