Mike Tyson

Few boxers struck fear in their opponents quite like Mike Tyson did in his pomp. What made this fact remarkable was that Tyson, at 5ft 10 ins tall, always gave away huge height and reach advantages to his heavyweight rivals.

For four years, from 1986, Tyson was the only show in town. His opponents came and went at regular intervals, usually within three rounds, beaten up by a man with fast hands, brutal power and a menacing presence reminiscent of George Foreman in his prime.

At 20 he became the youngest ever boxer to win the three main governing bodies' world belts and defended his crowns until complacency and a fast-unravelling private life left him on the canvas to journeyman James 'Buster' Douglas.

Injury and three years in jail meant the world had to wait until the mid-nineties to see if Tyson's comeback would end in glory. It didn't. He clawed back two titles but lost the WBA crown to Evander Holyfield before dragging himself back into the mire during the re-match when he was disqualified for biting off a piece of Holyfield's ear.

His career stumbled on until 2006 when his aura was well and truly shot, but Tyson remains one of heavyweight Boxing's all-time greats and to see him in his prime is to see one of the most destructive and fearsome exponents of the sweet science there has ever been.
