In an era when air travel is considered mundane, Concorde still has the capacity to inspire and delight in equal measure.
The supersonic plane flew for the last time ever in 2003. And at the controls was its chief pilot, Mike Bannister.
He first flew Concorde as a co-pilot in 1977 – the youngest ever to do so - before taking over as chief pilot in 1995. Five years after that, an Air France Concorde crash claimed 113 lives, and Mr Bannister played a vital role in making safety improvements so it could fly again, if only for another three years.
Since both he and his beloved plane retired, Mr Bannister has thrown himself into charitable enterprises, raising a staggering £2million through lectures, signings and personal appearances and contributions.
The iconic plane, on the equally iconic London to New York route, may be a thing of the past, but its proud history lives on in its final pilot.
