Some captains lead by example, others by their sheer presence. Martin Johnson had both leadership tools in his locker, commanding huge respect from teammates and opponents alike.
One of the greatest ever lock forwards to play the game, Johnson excelled for the Leicester Tigers in a 17-year club career.
Johnson is the only player to have captained the Lions on two tours. The first was a 2-1 Test defeat in Australia, the second a glorious 2-1 victory in South Africa. He also toured with the Lions in 1993.
His finest hour, however, came with England as he skippered them to victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup. His teammate Johnny Wilkinson grabbed the limelight (whether he wanted it or not) by kicking the last-gasp extra time drop goal that secured the win, but Johnson was a towering presence on the field and in the dressing room throughout the tournament.
Without him, English and Lions rugby would never have scaled such great heights.
