You've got be a special talent if they name a football trick after you. Few would deny that Johann Cruyff was special indeed.
The Cruyff Turn – fake to cross or pass and then drag the ball the other way, leaving a bamboozled marker in your wake – will be the Dutchman's legacy to the game, but his style, vision, technical ability and eye for an often spectacular goal deserve to live on just as long.
Cruyff epitomised the Total Football philosophy that took Holland to two World Cup finals in the 1970s and his club team, Ajax, to two European Cup triumphs. The second of these was a personal triumph for Cruyff as he scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Inter.
A move to Barcelona cemented his status as one of his era's footballing greats and his love affair with the Catalan club extended beyond his playing days. As manager, Cruyff led Barca to 11 trophies, including the European Cup in 1992. He even chose a Catalan name – Jordi – for his son.
Need further proof of Cruyff's status? He's one of only three footballers to have an asteroid named after him – a stellar achievement.
