JAMES EARL JONES
For a man with 60 distinguished years in the trade, across film, stage and television, American actor James Earl Jones will forever be known as the voice of Darth Vader from the Star Wars franchise.
Ironically, Jones wasn't even initially given a credit for the work – at his own insistence.
His voice work, however, is only one of many strings to his acting bow. He's won Tony awards for his stage acting, one of which honoured his portrayal of boxer Jack Jefferson in The Great White Hope, a role he reprised in the 1970 film of the same name.
He also received two Emmy awards for his TV work – in the same year – and an honorary Academy Award in 2011.
Not bad for a boy who was mute for eight years, was a stutterer and who only ended his long silence after being persuaded to recite the poetry a teacher discovered he had a gift for writing.
