Get up, say good morning to your nine brother and sisters and then run 10,000 metres to school – that was Haile Gebrselassie's daily routine growing up in Ethiopia.
Little wonder that the adult Haile became the undisputed 10K king, both on the track and across country.
Gebrselassie first tasted international success when he did the 5 and 10K double at the 1992 World Junior Championships. Just a year later, he would win the senior title at the longer distance – the first of four consecutive 10,000 metre world golds.
Back-to-back Olympic 10K titles followed and numerous world records and other track titles sealed Haile's status as his generation's most famous long distance athlete.
And then he started running marathons...
Haile went undefeated in all his 2005 street races before breaking the world record in the 2007 Berlin marathon and then breaking it again, on the same course, a year later.
All those youthful school runs had helped turn a skinny kid who ran with a crooked left arm as if he was still holding his school books, into one of long distance running's all-time greats.
