England football managers have a long and not so proud history of failing to build their teams around the best players at their disposal.
Jimmy Greaves, Rodney Marsh, Paul Gascoigne and Matt Le Tissier were all among the most talented and exciting players of their respective generations and all were mistrusted and under-used by their international managers.
Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle was another; a midfielder of vision, grace and technique who gained 53 caps for his country while never truly fitting in.
The irony is all the greater then that it was Hoddle, as England manager, who effectively ended Gascoigne's international career by not taking him to the World Cup at France '98, although the Geordie's battles with alcohol were as much behind the decision as footballing concerns.
Hoddle himself proved to be an excellent international coach, managing England with real purpose as his Three Lions went out, in desperately unlucky circumstances, to Argentina in a penalty shoot-out after an epic contest.
