EDWIN VAN DER SAR
Countless keepers came and went, none of them getting close to replicating Schmeichel's consistency and aura, before Edwin van der Sar signed from Fulham.
The Dutch beanpole spent the next six seasons as United's number one, prompting Sir Alex Ferguson to declare that van der Sar was the best keeper to play for the club since, you guessed it, Peter Schmeichel.
Throughout his career, van der Sar exuded a calm authority, using his 6ft 5.5 ins frame to deal with crosses and his long legs to stop shots that many other tall keepers would struggle to get down to.
With such ability came many rewards – domestic titles in both Holland and England, the UEFA Cup with Ajax and two Champions League wins – one each with Ajax and United.
Internationally, he was a permanent fixture for Holland and van der Sar is currently the most capped player in Dutch footballing history, turning out 130 times for the national side.
Since retiring in 2011, van der Sar has worked as a television pundit. But a coaching career beckons and it would be a surprise if the Dutchman doesn't bag a few more medals before he's finally done with the beautiful game.
