Captain of the remarkable Aston Villa side that won the League in 1981 and then the European Cup a year later, Dennis Mortimer is often described as one of the best players never to play for England.
Midfielder Mortimer was an ever-present for Villa in that 1981 campaign (and one of just 14 players used all season by boss Ron Saunders).
He was good enough to make most things look easy, belying his excellent range of passing, tireless energy and eye for a goal.
In nearly 600 pro appearances (more than 300 of which were for Villa), Mortimer found the net 47 times.
And yet his consistency, ability and leadership qualities still didn't earn him a single full England cap – a strange footnote to a brilliant career.
