Eighteen years a pro, the one and only Scottish winner of the Ballon d'Or, the subject of three separate record transfer fees – Denis Law is truly a football legend.
In all, he made 485 domestic appearances and scored 227 goals. For Scotland, he hit 30 goals in 55 games. He also scored 46 competitive goals in a single season for United – still a club record.
Despite all the glory, there were also downs for Law. He missed United's 1968 European Cup final win because of injury and his back-heeled goal for City – classic skilful and opportunistic Law stuff – in the Manchester derby helped send his beloved United down that season.
It turned out that United would have been relegated anyway, but Law refused to celebrate the goal and he retired not long afterwards after making his one and only World Cup finals appearance for Scotland in their undefeated but ultimately unsuccessful 1974 campaign.
