The English just don't make 'em like David Ginola – it's one of the reasons why the French remain the best of enemies.
But the tall actor, model, broadcaster and footballer was a fans' favourite during a 10-year career in top-flight English football.
He was the quintessential flair player for Newcastle, Spurs and, to a lesser extent Villa and Everton – possessed of breathtaking skill, the creator of unlikely chances and the scorer of spectacular goals.
For France, things were rather more complicated. The then national manager, Gerard Houllier, blamed Ginola for his country's failure to qualify for the 1994 World Cup. Ginola, on as a sub in a game against Bulgaria that the French needed only a draw from to secure their World Cup place, mis-hit a cross that led to a break and the Bulgarians' winner.
Houllier described Ginola as the 'assassin of the team' who had sent 'an Exocet missile through the heart of French football'. That led to his move to England, where Ginola set about slaying the hearts of a large percentage of England's women.
