Any decent batsman worth his salt has scored a first-class hundred. Many have hit a double ton. The chosen few have managed a triple century. But quadruples? Or a quintuple?
Only Lara has done that.
Brian Lara deflated, dispirited and destroyed international bowling attacks throughout a record-strewn 17-year West Indies cricket career.
His batting was by turns graceful and brutal, his shot selection impeccable and his appetite for runs almost inhuman – as it would have to be when you're hitting 400 not out against England in Antigua in 2004.
In the same year, he threw in another 101 runs to finish 501 not out in a county game for Warwickshire against Durham. That innings was, and still is, the only quintuple century ever recorded in first class cricket.
Has there ever been a better batsman? Bradman probably, Tendulkar at a pinch. But Lara is right up there when it comes to cricketing greats and his record innings will probably never be surpassed.
