Brian Fletcher

It's not so often that a jockey is consistently upstaged by the horse he's riding, but that dubious honour will follow Brian Fletcher to the grave.

The County Durham-born National Hunt jockey is one of only three men to win the Grand National at least three times.

But it is his mount, Red Rum, who will forever remain synonymous with the Aintree classic.

Fletcher first won the National on another Red – Red Alligator – in 1968 when he was just 19. But it is his partnership with 'Rummy' and their two victories (in '73 and '74) and second place in the 1975 race that secured his place in racing history.

So, which of the three National victories does he regard as his greatest ride? None of them. Instead, he rates his ride on Red Rum to win the 1974 Scottish Grand National as his crowning glory.

A head injury forced Fletcher to retire in 1976 and these days he spends his time farming sheep in Wales.
