Wheel away, raise one arm and then briefly turn to see if anyone's chasing you – Alan Shearer's goal celebration was a decidedly frequent occurrence during a long and distinguished football career for Southampton, Blackburn, Newcastle and England.
He marked his full debut for the Saints in 1988 with a hat-trick and kept scoring goal after goal until he finally hung up his boots in 2006. Bullet headers, tap-ins and 30-yard screamers – Shearer scored them all.
The contrast between his on and off-field personas could not be more marked. In his autobiography, he famously wrote that he kept himself busy during a major international tournament that injury had ruled him out of by creosoting a fence. That understated, some might say boring, side to him was completely at odds with his dynamic, and at times combative, playing style.
A brief stint as Newcastle boss led to his beloved Toon being relegated and he then returned to his current role as a Match of the Day pundit for which younger fans know him best.
