'The Professor' or archetypal mardy Frenchman? Motorsport legend Alain Prost was probably a bit of both during an F1 career full of triumphs, tiffs and tantrums.
In his 13 years in Formula One, Prost won the drivers' championship four times and racked up a then-record 51 race victories.
His style was smooth and watchful, his knowledge of car set-ups unsurpassed, his attention to detail legendary.
But it was his steely competitiveness that marked him out – and led to very public rows with Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell. Prost and Senna were more than happy to take each other out on the track and Mansell claimed that the Frenchman undermined him even when they were on the same team.
And yet, when Senna died, it was Prost who helped to carry his coffin – a mark of the respect, and ultimately love – that the Frenchman earned for himself in a stellar career.
