TORVILL AND DEAN

The seventies and eighties were a golden age for British Ice Skating. John Curry won Olympic gold in 1976 and Robin Cousins repeated the trick four years later.

But it was in 1984, at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, that Nottingham pair Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean took ice skating to a different level – not just in Britain but across the globe.

Their daring, beautiful and technically challenging routine to Ravel's Bolero won them a gold medal – and perfect sixes for artistic impression from every single judge.

That routine was voted the eighth greatest sporting moment in a top 100 poll conducted in 2002, confirming former secretary Torvill and ex-copper Dean as sporting legends.

After the triumph of Sarajevo, the pair turned pro and wowed audiences across the globe with their unique blend of technical excellence and artistic interpretation of music before returning for one last stab at the Olympics, in 1994, where they won bronze.

These days, the couple are just as well-known for their television work on Dancing On Ice, both in Britain and Australia.

But if you're of a certain age, hearing the first strains of Ravel's haunting work will forever transport you back to four minutes of pure sporting magic on a Sarajevo ice rink in 1984.
